INTERVIEW: Bottomline Entertainment & MiRRaH 2006
07.25.06 (5:50 pm) [edit]
What’s popping people once again Bottomline Entertainment has return with another exclusive interview for this month. Here with me right now is the most talented and beautiful Mirrah. Second runner up from the UPN Reality show TLC’s R U the Girl? , raising hip hop star in the making. Mirrah let’s get into it shall we:
Q. Now a lot of people claim to love HipHop and its
elements. Tell me how deep are your HipHop roots and
how much of a b-girl are you?
MIRRAH:
Being a B-Girl, hmmmm... I breathe HipHop. I love
HipHop. And, like Teacha aka KRS-One says, “I am
HipHop.”
I’m a proud “Temple of HipHop” member that is founded
by KRS-One.
I acknowledge HipHops movement and being apart of its
path, as one of the many voices that introduce the
world to how ‘our’ youths are effected by the yin and
yangs in life.
The music industry slept on ‘HipHop’ when it was
birthed during the late 70’s early 80’s. They doubted
in HipHop, calling it a phase. And now, years later it
has become well known and metaphorically become its
own living, pulsating, breathing self. Which has
opened doors for races to mix and learn from other
cultures.
Although some have used and abused HipHops means and
friendship altering its personality and class, yet
there are others who cherish and nurture allowing
growth but also reminding ‘HipHop’ of its Golden ages,
ol’skool values and roots.
Each emcee/ poet/rapper today thrives to share HipHops
soul by ciphering their individual voices to transcend
thru which creates diversity and expands the movement
and path that HipHop is today.
HipHop’s elements have become entrepreneurial!
They have grown more than known 5 elements now, its
beautifully crazy!
Q. Do you find that your poetry writing is the same as
your rap lyrical skills or are they two different
elements to you?
MIRRAH:
Well, I started as a poet. Since I was a child it
assisted me to get thru childhood BS and as far as
rhyming, I used to just emulate Rakim & MC Lyte and
others who set off the hype for my soul.
As a poet I used to perform in London. I then met an
emcee bout 11 years ago and he had taught me a lil’
more how to write in bars for each verse and for
chorus’s. At present, my King (my business partner) is
apart of my writing team. We are a great
collaboration.
I find writing my poetry, need not to rhyme nor have a
structure such as my songs. And I also may get a lil’
more detailed as a poet lyrically. As far as my songs,
they are written to introduce radio and album
listeners to straight away let you know what I am
talking bout and feel, in 3-4 minutes but then again,
as an artist, each artist has their own way in
defining who they are over instrumentation and that’s
what makes music such a beauty to be apart of.
I’m a fellow music consumer. So, I make sure I
empathize to the music market in how to introduce my
own flavor to the US and world with out selling out.
Q. And which do you find harder to do?
MIRRAH: It depends how I feel, I write more poems than
songs but my poems become songs… I feel every creative
thought is a birth of a new project.
Q. You claim to have a raspy vocal tone, natural low
but when I listen to your music, you come off smooth
and refreshing. Do you still feel that you have that
raspy vocal tone?
MIRRAH: Well thank you for the compliment. (Nodding
head with a smile) But I definitely feel I have a
natural low raspy vocal tone. Reason being, I’m an
emcee that sings. My smooth tone you hear, maybe my
Australian and English accent coming out LOL. So I
realize that my vocals reflect my adopted upbringing.
An Australian and an American from New York, Bronx,
adopted me. My accent is crazy, It’s New York with
Australian and English highlights. LOL…
Q. I see that you’re a myspace junkie (like myself) and
you feature four tracks (Ladies, Let em out, Stalking
you and Love Is). Can you break your own the
significant of each track?
MIRRAH:
1) “Ladies” was written to hype up my sistas. It
expresses empowerment, and our positive positions in
our world today, and in the music industry. We are now
recognized in the hierarchy, as business owners. Each
day we try to better ourselves to be recognized as
strength not just as sexual beings. To be sexy, is to
be on top of your game!
Also Women need to congratulate one another more. I
felt we could celebrate with this song together.
Chorus:” Ladies! That keep the place pumping, keep the
place jumping, instigate sumthin’
Fellas! Its time to quit playing cuz the Ladies trying
to change the game!”
Bridge: “ I know it’s usually all about the fellas but
this is for my LADIES!”
2)”Let em out” I feel people prejudge looks, and
culture to fast which confuses their perception of my
personality and heart of who I am as a female and as a
HipHop artist. I am sharing an honest introduction to
who I am, and what I go thru as a womanly Tomboy/
b-girl daily in this music business.
3) “Stalking you” is a personal experience I went thru
in a relationship. It is a message for those women who
are apart of an abusive relationship and don’t know
how or wish to leave. It shares what I went thru and
it also shows my strong choice to leave. It is to
build their confidence to not be stalked by negative
thoughts and beings. To become FREE and STRONG and
Love again.
4) “Love is” describes how my passion of loving
someone is. To be loved and to share Love equally is a
bond that is truly wonderful.
MIRRAH Reflects Life Love & Music… Bless
Q. When you were on “R U the Girl”, describe that
feeling when you were compared to Left Eyes (r.i.p)?
MIRRAH: Bless Lisa!
My feelings and thoughts were more interested in why?
And I was also praying that they weren’t going to send
me off the show for that reason. I was complimented
somewhat, as she was an interesting, deep individual.
Yet, I was there to resonate myself and introduce who
I am, humbly.
Q. Do you feel that you sound like Left Eye? And are
people still comparing you to her, even though you’re
MIRRAH the reflection of life, love and music?
MIRRAH:
I believe that “TLC” opened the doors for all tomboys
to be heard, felt and be noticed. So I am only apart
of the ‘many’ who share similarities to how the 3
ladies expressed what a ‘tomboy’ is. Thus my vocal
tones and pattern may be heard to have similar
characteristics but I don’t emulate Left Eye. I have
made sure my own low raspy pitch, expresses the true
MIRRAH.
Q. Do you still keep in contact with TLC’s Chilli and
T-Boz?
MIRRAH: Unfortunately I haven’t, but they are very
private with their lovable families and I too am a
private person so, I over stand their reasons.
I am proud to have met them as matured artists and am
grateful of their patience and love towards me.
Q. Did you find it hard growing up with Caucasian
couple being an Indonesian with African American
decent?
MIRRAH: Not at all, my parents raised me, how to be a
human being. Not as a race. They taught me about my
race and ‘herstory’ and introduced me to many
countries so I was constantly around different
cultures. They weren’t in the service either. I view
life in a broader perspective.
Q. Where is Mirrah homeland?
MIRRAH: WOW, its earth. LoL (sorry)
Reason is, I was born in Indonesia adopted and
traveled, grew up in Honduras, LA, Peru, Australia,
England and now here in the US again LA, CA.
Q. Name some of the artist’s you have perform with and
do you remember your first hip hop experience as a
performer?
MIRRAH: I performed with Flavor Flav, and “Public
Enemy”. Flav blessed me with the opportunity to become
his hype man on their “Fear of the Black Planet” Tour.
It was great to feel the crowd and be accepted and
respected as a female rhymer.
Q. Who are some of your musical influences?
MIRRAH:
I have many influences beyond HipHop. I grew up to a
variety of sounds and genres. My love of HipHop, 80's
pop, Chicago house, Soul/ Jazz and R&B are as blended
in my sound as is my culture. Therefore I am a
'reflection' of my surroundings.
Q. Why did you choose this genre of music and what
message do you want to portray in your music? Why are
those people your influence in this industry?
MIRRAH: It added and gave me my own personal style and
introduced me to become alert to 'music'. The HipHop
groups and artists shared their Soul, their Blues,
their Rhythm and Bass and made it “Pop” out to the
world. They were known as the underground Digable
Planets, The Roots, Tribe Called Quest, Del La Soul,
KRS One( Teacha),AZ, Nas, Mos Def, Talib Kweli,
Common, Bohamadia, Mobb Deep and The Fugees.
Each artist expressed either fun vibes or witty word
play with life meaningful perceptions. Which made me
say I want in!! I wish to share my perceptions and
just do what I love to do which is to perform and be
respected as a mixed race and cultured female in the
music industry.
Q. Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for a
song?
MIRRAH:I may listen to the beats and see the story of
my experience or what I have seen or heard from others
lives and start writing lil’ here and there and then
poof it’s a song…LOL
Q. What's your next project?
MIRRAH: To have meetings with positive and willing
people in the industry to assist the movement of Me
(Mirrah) also to not be scared to reflect my music
either thru distribution or a deal that sets the
correct tone for a new refreshing sound.
Q. How did you get involved in this industry?
MIRRAH: I used to dance and choreograph and model in
my early years. So I met many people in the
entertainment and was always approached to be an
artist. Back then I didn’t even consider music as a
goal. It was a hobby, an expression to let out. I then
changed my poems to rhyme lyrics and battle rhymes LOL
and then fell into wanting to nourish this venture. To
portray a positive female is work and is a learning
experience of ones self. It feels great to look back
and see what I have accomplished.
Q. What advice would you give other young people
trying to make a name in this industry?
MIRRAH:
1) Be yourself; don’t fall into your ego becoming too
big for your bridges that you stop learning and
listening from others.
2) Don’t sell your soul to become famous. Become
recognized as an Artist with true hard work ethics and
train every day your skills.
3) Don’t just sign or agree to everything that is
placed in front of you. Start reading books and
learning the entertainment business so you may know
how to become an owner of your goal.
4) Be a Leader not a follower, but be as much a
student as much as a teacher.
What is in the future for MIRRAH?
MIRRAH: To be respected as a artist, to have my sound
resonate across the world and to also write a poetry
book and some other projects I am planning to pull out
the magic hat in the near future.
When are you coming to Toronto to bless us with your
gifted talent?
Mirrah: Again I thank you for the warm love and
appreciation of my personal musical movement and
being. I wish to come to Canada sooooo soon, as I love
yall spirit and way of life. Please be patient and
also request me, so then my team and I may arrange
that visit or tour to happen! J
